incapable for hosting any other activitiy than passing by

or  even worse: 
whole front space is dedicated to serve as an entrance to private garages only
 
as a visitor where to park the car if this were  generally accepted rule

Trakoscanska street in Zagreb  justifies

we used to build like this: solid mid-sized pedestrian lane 

capable to host  green yards and occasional  metal intruder

or lot of limos  from time to time

far better is to have chat over drinks  in front of the house

conclusion:
on the main roads  intermediate semiprivate spaces are highly appreciated 

Privatisation of public spaces

do not use chains to stress your ownership,

don't build impenetrable walls  no Huns are expected to drop by again

private yards without contact with the street in mind

private yards fence  up to the roadway
  - opulence of  shrubs, trees, pots

have anything inviting even schmall in front of the building

add tables

or a bench consider it as an invitation
